QUESTION ONE

1 (a) Discuss the sources of ethical problems in businesses. (10 marks)
(b) In a large scooter company, the Director HR had discovered a new way to contain
union militancy. He encourages union leaders to open small scale businesses in the
names of their family members. He then prevailed on the chief material manager to
place orders with their small scale businesses for purchase of auto spares. In so
doing, the union leaders were “bought out” and these labour aristocrats in turn
ensured peace and productivity on the shop floor. You are the new CEO. Will you
continue with the practice? Explain. (6 marks)
(c) Advertising is attracting a lot of attention in business ethics. Using relevant examples,
explain the major ethical issues in advertising. (6 marks)
(d) Postmodern ethics is an approach that locates morality beyond the sphere of
rationality in an emotional ‘moral impulse’ towards others. Explain the major
considerations of post-modern perspective to business ethics. (8 marks)

QUESTION THREE

3 (a) many companies are instituting ethics programs of one kind or another. However
toothless ethics programs provide no protection from potentially catastrophic ethical
failures. Discuss measures which companies interested in implementing ethics
programs would take (12 marks)
(b) What benefits would an organization involved in proper corporate governance
accrue? (8 marks)

4 (a) Discuss using relevant examples limitations of the following theories of evaluating
business ethics.
(i) Ethics of duties. (3 marks)
(ii) Ethics of utilitarianism. (3 marks)
(b) Think about the concepts of absolutism and relativism in the context of bribery. How
would each of the theories conceptualize the problem of bribery and what cause of
action might they suggest for someone faced with a corrupt official? (6 marks)
(c) You have been charged with the responsibility of instilling values and promoting
ethical behavior in a growing business organization. Discuss the measures you would
take to establish compliance ethics program. (8 marks)
