Section A: (40 marks)
1. The following specimens were provided for a vertebrate biology practical class:
(A) a hag fish, (B) a shark and (C) a perch.
a. State 2 morphological differences between:
i. Specimen A and C (2 marks)
ii. Specimen B and C (2 marks)
b. The students obtained blood samples of specimens B and C and determine the
concentration of Nitrogenous salts in the blood samples. Which blood samples do you
expect will have higher values and why. (2 marks)
c. Outline 3 adaptations that enable cartilaginous fishes to stay afloat in their environment.
(3 marks)

2. Describe features that enable birds to fly. (8 marks)

3. (a) Account for migration in vertebrates (3 marks)
(b) Describe how mammals are variously adapted to utilize the varieties of foods in their
environment. (6 marks)

4. (a) Describe adaptive radiation & explain its cause (3 marks)
(b) Describe 3 morphological developments that occurred in various reptile groups
as a result of adaptive radiation in reptiles. (3 marks)

5. (a) Give evidence to show that amphibians may have evolved from lobe-finned fishes.
(4 marks)
(b) State the adaptations of frogs to amphibious mode of life. (4 marks)

SECTION B: (30 marks)
6. Discuss giving examples, the mechanisms used by birds and mammals in thermo-regulation
(15 marks)

7. Discuss the challenges encountered by vertebrates as they moved from an aquatic to
terrestrial environment (15 marks)

8. Discuss the factors that enabled vertebrates to be adapted to terrestrial environment
