SECTION A COMPULSORY (30 MARKS)
1. a) Phonetics and phonology are two inextricably related disciplines. Discuss the validity
of this claim with reference to the English Language. (20 marks)

b) Explain the role played by the following articulators in the production of speech
sounds.

i. The lips (5 marks)
ii. The tongue (5 marks)

SECTION B: ATTEMPT ANY TWO QUESTIONS. (40 MARKS)

2. Using clear illustrations, classify the English consonants on the basis of place and manner
of articulation. (20 marks)

3. a) With a clearly labeled diagram, explain how English vowels are produced. (12 marks)
b) Make short notes on the following terms.

i. Broad and narrow transcription. (4 marks)
ii. PA chart (4 marks)

4. a) Differentiate between phonemes and allophones in English. (8 marks)
b) Discuss with appropriate examples from English the criteria used to differentiate
phonemes from allophones. (12 marks)
