SECTION A – Answer all questions in this section [25 MARKS]
1. a). Differentiate between National Organic standards and Regional Organic
standards (2 marks)

b). Discuss two(2) different approaches of achieving organic certification in East
Africa
(6 marks)

c). Due to local situations, local markets within East Africa are less developed and
most certified organic products target the export market. Describe the
characteristics of customers of organic products (5 marks)

d). Suggest different ways of how local organic markets can be organized and
encouraged (2 marks)


2. Discuss five (5) challenges facing Organic Agriculture in East Africa and suggest
ways of overcoming them (10 Marks)



SECTION B – Answer any three (3) questions in this section [45 MARKS]

3. Discuss the historical developments and the current status of Organic Agriculture (in
terms of products, certification, markets and policy) in any country of your choice in
East Africa. (15 marks)


4. Considering that soils in East Africa are fragile and can easily be degraded, discuss
three (3) approaches of managing such soil organically so as to provide plant nutrients
and prevent nutrient mining. (15 marks)


5. Use specific examples below to demonstrate the likely positive effects of Organic
Agriculture on food security and income (15 marks)

c) Food safety


6. Organic farming limits the use of synthetic chemicals in pest, disease and weed
control. Discuss organically acceptable alternatives to:

7. Organic produce undergo very little processing in East Africa and farmers and
companies are encouraged to process products before export:
