Answer three questions. Question One is compulsory.
1. What is the Caribbean Novel? Discuss how the history of the Caribbean has influenced
trends in Caribbean Novel? (15 marks)
(a) Discuss the five major themes of Caribbean writing, showing the role of the
history discussed above in developing these themes. (15 marks).
2. A Brighter Sun and Turn Again Tiger are voyages of self-discovery and adjustment".
Illustrate this statement in reference to any three relationships in the texts. 20 marks
3. "Dat Ascot, I did always know he wudda reach far you know". Critically assess this
evaluation of Ascot by Aunt Essie showing why you would or would not describe him as
having "reached far". 20 marks
4. "Both lack of education and the alienation caused by education disorient the West-.
Indian characters making them victims of their social set up". Discuss this statement
supporting your response with any two stories in Sam Selvon's Ways of Sunlight. 20
marks
5. Is the portrayal of women in Caribbean writing sensitive to their growth and
development? Illustrate your answer with two short stories not discussed in any of the
questions above, one of which should be authored by a woman. 20 marks
6. "Edgar Mitelhozer's My Bones and My Flute is no more than a good ghost story with
a resolution in the end. Discuss. 20 marks
7. Discuss the way in which race and change have been presented in either Michael
Anthony's The Year in San Fernando or Lammings In the Castle of my Skin. 20 marks.
