QUESTION ONE
a) Your friend runs a small business. Since he has no IS specialists on his staff, he plans to purchase all his software. He approaches you for advice. Prepare a short presentation outlining THREE areas that might be of most important concern to him and how he might address these concerns (9 marks)
b)
i) With the use of examples, explain what the data resource is and why it is so important in today’s organizations (4 marks)
ii) Describe any THREE strategies you would advise an organization to use to ensure the quality of their data (6 marks)
c)
i) Explain the ‘Information Technology Infrastructure Library’ framework (5 marks)
ii) Describe the benefits it provides for implementation of information systems in organizations (6 marks)

QUESTION TWO
A transport and logistics company has decided that it no longer requires a Head Office and its strategic aim is to become a virtual organization. As the company’s IT manager, you are required to provide guidance on the way forward.
a) Write a report in which you discuss the various MIS technologies that the company needs to invest in to create a virtual organization (8 marks)
b) The company’s auditors have concerns that information held by the virtual company would lack security. Draw up an information security policy for the organization in which you analyze the measures that the virtual company would utilize to ensure their information remains secure (12 marks)
QUESTION THREE
Pesa Mingi Financies Limited, a medium-sized financial services organization is seeking a replacement IT manager to restore confidence in the MIS function and to lead a redevelopment of its corporate systems. The organization’s current systems were developed about fifteen years ago, but new systems are needed to meet changing business requirements. The MID department has begun some redevelopments, but these have failed due to misunderstandings over who should be involved at each stage of the system development process. As part of the selection process for the new IT manager, you have been asked to make a presentation to demonstrate your suitability for the position. Prepare notes for the presentation to clearly demonstrate your understanding of the following:
a) The role of the IT manger and the personal qualities required (8 marks)
b) The involvement of user staff and MIS staff in all the system development stages, from initial system request to post implementation review (8 marks)
c) IT-business strategic alignment (4 marks)

QUESTION FOUR
A large food retailing company has procured and implemented a new Human Resources (HR) system. The management reporting functions of the HR system are weak and senior management want to improve the management reporting capabilities. The following options are being considered:
Option 1: the in-house development of a fixed reporting facility (using existing DBMS software) that would import data from the HR system.
Option 2: the procurement of a compatible off-the-shelf software package that provides a set of standardized fixed reports directly off the HR data repository.
a) Critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of the two options. State any assumptions you make about the organization within your answer (10 marks)
b) Irrespective of the strengths and weaknesses, senior management have selected option2. Discuss, with aid of examples, the process you would adopt to choose the most suitable package to purchase (10 marks)

QUESTION FIVE
You have recently been appointed the IT manger of a large organization with 10 branches in the major towns in Kenya. The organization has been running various ICT systems in the 15 years of its existence and is now interested in acquiring modern information systems to support its current and future business processes.
a) Prepare a report in which you discuss the management, organization and technology issues the organization should consider when selecting computer hardware and software to meet their requirements (10 marks)
b) Draw up a corporate ethics code that will guide the organization in the use of its information systems (10 marks)
