a) Explain the following terminologies as used in networking:
(i) Standards;
(ii) Protocol;
(iii) VoIP;
(iv) WAP. (4marks)
b) Explain Domain Name Service (DNS) as used in networking. (2marks)
c) Outline four main duties of a network administrator. (4marks)
d) Explain the significant of the ping command in networking. (2marks)
e) Explain the difference between the following pair of terms:
i. IPv4 and public IPv6;
ii. WI-FI and WIMAX. (4marks)

a) Explain the following networking concepts:
(i) DHCP;
(ii) FTP. (2marks)
b) With aid of diagrams explain the difference between client/servers and peer-to-peer network. (3marks)
c) Assume you are troubleshooting a LAN network within a University; enumerate the steps recommended for effective network troubleshooting. (3marks)
d) Enumerate six ethical behaviours that are expected of a network administrator. (3marks)
e) Distinguish between the following terms as used in networking environment:

a) Fred wants to buy a router for use within SEKU. Outline two factors he needs to consider when selecting a router for setting up internet connectivity. (2marks)
b) Changing network infrastructure involves deploying new network segments or reconfiguring hardware or network services in some way. Discuss three reasons why established networks may require change. (3marks)
c) Networks today are the major backbone on which most organizations run. It is thus imperative for each organization that is running networks to ensure on the security of their networks. Security becomes a great challenge especially when we consider that the organizations network often connects to other external networks. Describe four threats or attacks that networks are constantly faced with, recommending solutions.

Consider that you have been hired as a network designer and administrator at SEKU and you have just realized that their networking services are wanting especially within Research and Office Block. Your first task is to judiciously carry out the objectives and goals needs analysis in order to restructure and improve services.

(ii) The IEEE standards restrict the maximum length of the coaxial cable to 500m for 10 BASE5. Explain the reasons. (2marks)
(iii) Explain the difference between 802.11a and 802.11g as wireless network standards from IEEE. (2marks)
(iv) Describe three network design recommendations. (3marks)
(v) Explain the need for wireless technology as an alternative to copper cable.
