SECTION ONE:
(30 Marks)

Define the terms mathematics and dyscalculia. [2 marks]
2.
Explain the importance of mathematics to mankind as narrated by National Research Council (1989). [4 marks]
3.
In your own opinion, what do you think Lerner (2006) meant when she said "We live in a mathematical world". [2 marks]
4.
Justify why students with disabilities need to be proficient in mathematics. [2 marks]
5.
Explain the prevalence of mathematics disabilities both in general education and students with learning disabilities. [2 marks]
6.
Explain the common mathematics difficulties among adolescents at secondary school level. [4 marks]
7.
Briefly explain the various mathematics difficulties experienced by children with disabilities in information processing. [5 marks]
8.
Explain what is math anxiety and how it blocks school performance. [5 marks]
9.
How would a class teacher promote a positive attitude towards mathematics to a child who is in a "hopeless" situation as far as mathematics subject is concerned? (Give 4 points only). [4 marks}

Analyze mathematics errors made by children with mathematics disabilities and explain with relevant examples the different errors in place value as described by Mercer (1997) and Lerner (2006). [20 marks}

Discuss with examples 5 teaching activities used to instruct children with mathematics disabilities an "word story problems". [20 marks]
