1.
Consider a two independent sample design in which you wish to test whether there is any statistically significant difference between groups.
a)
For samples of sizes n1 and n2 define a test statistic bringing out clearly assumptions as well as the null hypothesis to be tested. [5 marks]
b)
What is the sampling distribution of this test statistic if both samples are of same size, say n. [2 marks]
c)
Comment on the robustness of the test. [6 marks]
2.

In the clinical trials to study the efficacy of AZT, persons with AIDs were randomly assigned to receive AZT or a placebo. Neither the subjects nor their doctors (physicians) knew whether they were receiving AZT or the placebo (commonly referred to as a “double-blind” study). After 6 months on the drug, two of the 138 subjects in experimental i.e E ( AZT)group had died, whereas 22 of the 148 persons in the control C (Placebo) group had died.
Test whether AZT prolongs life ata level 0.05. [7 marks]
4.
A researcher carried out study on five variables on a group of subject he selected randomly from his population. The variables were:
X1 = Scores on a test in English
X2 = Scores on a test in Mathematics
X3 = Scores on a test in Kiswahili
X4 = Scores on a test in Social Science
X5 = Scores on a test in Psychomotor Skills
The researcher had the covariance matrix for the variable as:

Suppose the cognitive psychology designs research study to investigate different problem-solving strategies. Eight (8) subjects are randomly assigned to one of the five (5) different groups; each group is taught to use a different problem- solving strategy. Time is noted they take to solve the problem after training. The following is a partially completed summary ANOVA table for this study. Complete the summary ANOVA table and answer the following questions for testing the appropriate hypothesis usinga = .05
