Explain the important factors that influence the choice of the design when selecting the sampling methods of forest inventories. (10 marks)

Suppose that you have been contracted to carry out research to estimate the population size of animals. State the methods and describe how you will undertake the field work. (15 marks)

Use the Lincoln – Petersen method to estimate the population size of fish in a lake where a researcher captures 20 fish on her first visit to the lake, and marks their backs with paint. A week later she returns to the lake and captures 30 fish. Ten of these 30 fish have paint on their backs, indicating that they are recaptured animals. (15 marks)
