1.a)Explain how biomembranes determine the composition of the space they
enclose. [5marks]
b) Explain the chemical compositions of biomebranes. [5marks]
c) Define membrane symmetry and explain how it is maintained.[10marks]

2. a) What are the major purposes of active transport in the mammalian body?[4marks]
b) Explain the mechanism of the sodium pump in the plasma membrane.[8marks]
c) Explain the two characteristics of membrane transport systems.[8marks]

3. a) Describe the electron transfer methods in the transport chain of the
mitochondria. [10marks]
b) Illustrate the formula used to calculate the Free Energy Changes
accompanying electron transport. [4marks]
c) Calculate the amount of energy released when electrons transverse the
whole mitochondria electrons transport chain if the redox potential of
NAD/MADH couple = -0.32v and oxygen/water couple = +0.82v. and
account for all energy released. [6marks]
