SECTION A: Compulsory (30 MARKS)
QUESTION ONE
(a) Oral literature dwells on issues relevant to the immediate society. Discuss the validity of
this assertion showing how oral literature draws from and reflects society. (20 marks)
(b) Name two types of audience in oral literature and explain why an oral performer should
consider his or her audience. (4 marks)
(c) State three major functions of riddles in society. (6 marks)

(a) Oral literature is as important now as it was in traditional society. Evaluate the truth of this
claim in relation to four main functions of oral literature. (16 marks)

(b) Differentiate between ‘translation’ and transcription. (4 marks)
QUESTION THREE
(a) Oral literature is a performed art. Discuss any five performance devices that an oral artist
should use to effectively narrate a story, and justify your choice. (10 marks)
(b) Explain clearly why oral narratives employ the following characteristics.
(i) Songs (3 marks)
(ii) Animal characters (3 marks)
(iii) Opening and closing formula (4 marks)
QUESTION FOUR
(a) Imagine that you are in the field researching on oral poems.
(i) State the two most appropriate methods you would use in collecting data and explain
the reason for your preference. (4 marks)
(ii) Discuss four major problems you are likely to encounter and suggest ways of coping
with them. (12 marks)
(b) One finger cannot kill a louse.
Too may rats cannot dig a hole.
The above two proverbs appear contradictory. For each of them
(i) Provide another proverb in English that has a similar meaning. (2 marks)
(ii) Cite a situation where they can be applied. (2 marks)
