QUESTION ONE
(a) Discuss the attributes of an academic research ( 4 Marks)
(b) Discuss the importance of literature review (4 Marks)
(c) A brief television news item cited the results of a survey (note, not a controlled experiment) on
children's eating patterns in rural Kenya. The study found that the frequency of several
categories of health problems showed significantly higher rates for children who ate more than
20 donuts a week compared to a group who ate less than 20 donuts a week. The television
report concluded that eating donuts is bad for children's health. Is this a valid conclusion?
(4 Marks)
(d) List 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of pretesting a questionnaire in e research.
Explain the differences between the different types of research designs. (4 Marks)
(e) Tito, a university student is set to conduct a research for his thesis and intends to use stratified
sampling. Explain how he should carry out his sampling (6 Marks)
(f) A student at the Jomo Kenyatta University is to carry out a research on the impact of
microfinance on the beneficiaries. The student has approached you to come up with the
objectives and importance of the study.
Required:
Outline the objectives of the above study and indicate the contribution of the said
research (8 Marks)

QUESTION TWO
a) I design an experiment to investigate the relationship between viewing violence and
committing violent acts. I randomly assign a group of children to watch an adult get
angry at a “Bobo” doll. The adults hit and kick the doll repeatedly, shouting things like
“Sock him in the nose,” “Kick him in the leg.” A different group of children (also chosen
via random assignment) doesn't get to watch the doll beating. Then I give all of the kids a
really frustrating task. I observe how they treat a “Bobo” doll in the testing room. I count
the number of times the kids hit the doll. The ones who watched the adult hit the doll are
more likely to hit the doll themselves.
