a) List and explain four Components of an information system ( 8 Marks)
b) The term “computer” describes a device made up of a combination of electronic and
electromechanical components. By itself, a computer has no intelligence and is referred to as
hardware which means simply the physical equipment. The hardware cannot be used, until it is
connected to other elements, all of which constitute the six parts-of a computer-based
information system.
Required:
Describe six components of a computer-based information system. (12 Marks)
c) Every PC needs an operating system to provide a platform on which application programscan be
run.
i) Most PCs support multitasking. Define the term multitasking and give an example of its
application. (3 Marks)
ii) More modern PCs support multiprocessing. Explain what is meant by multiprocessing.

b) There are many different types of printer that can be connected to a Personal Computer. Daisy
Wheel and Dot Matrix printers have been almost completely replaced by Inkjet and Laser printers.
i) Explain why the Daisy Wheel and Dot Matrix printers have become less popular.

ii) State the factors that might influence the choice between an Inkjet and a Laser printer.
(3 Marks)
iii) Multifunction devices combine the functions of a printer, a scanner, and a Fax. Comment
on the merits (or otherwise) of purchasing a multifunction device rather than three separate
machines. (3 Marks)
