Question One

MAJI MATAMU CO. LTD.

Maji matamu is a private company manufacturing paper products. It was founded five years ago by two young managers in order to manufacture and market high quality paper products to East and Central African countries.

The company has grown rapidly. It now has 300 employees in two industrial units in Thika and Athi River. There are five directors; the two founders and their wives and a finance director who was recruited last year. The finance Director has produced a report that indicates the need for a reward management strategy. Earlier on, the directors were determining their own salaries and that of its staff. This had made it impossible to attract and retain competent staff. Those who remained were demoralized. Their commitment and loyalty to the company was doubtful as most of them carried out part-time jobs for rival companies.

Consultants who were recently engaged have recommended that there should be a survey carried out in order to enable the company to get specific information on the pay or was decided that this recommendation should be adopted immediately after clear and concise steps required to conduct the survey had been developed.

The consultants also suggested that there was need for the company to retain the committed and skilled employees during the initial period which was expected to have several problems. They also recommended that a Human Resource Manager started work. Her initial findings show that the company is full of rumours, many of them alarmist about the future. Two key research and development specialists are said to be looking for other jobs because they have heard from the grapevine that the company is being sold to a major competitor. A number of production employees have also just joined a trade union.
