QUESTION 1.

A student stores all his/her assignments on a pen drive (USB Memory stick).

a) Give TWO reasons why pen drives have replaced floppy disks. (2 marks)

b) The teacher warned about computer viruses.
i) What is a computer virus? (1 marks)
ii) How are viruses spread from one computer to another? (2 marks)
iii) State THREE things that the student should do to reduce the risk of a
computer being infected by a computer virus. (3 marks)

c) Explain how the following types of computer differ:-
• Laptop. (1 marks)
• Mainframe. (1 marks)
• PC. (1 marks)
d) A student connects to the Internet using a telephone line.
i) What device is used to connect a computer to a telephone network?

ii) What does this device do? (2 marks)

e) The following are the main types of validation checks:-

State which of the above checks are the most appropriate to identify the error in
EACH of the following circumstances:-

ii) Examination fee entered as £700 instead of £7.
iii) Surname omitted when setting up a new student record.
iv) Product code entered as ABC123 instead of 123ABC.

f) The Internet has changed the way people carry out many everyday activities. One
change is the use of Internet shopping.

i) State TWO advantages of shopping online for the customer. (2 marks)
ii) State TWO disadvantages of Internet shopping for the customer. (2 marks)
g) When sending credit card/debit card details to make a purchase, customers are usually
directed to a secure site. Explain what a secure site is. (2 marks)


h) Email is one tool for internet communication.
i) State TWO advantages of email compared to ordinary post. (2 marks)
ii) Give TWO disadvantages of email. (2 marks)

i) Data must be kept confidential for reasons of commercial confidentiality and because
of people’s natural right to privacy. In this context explain what is meant by
safe disposal of waste. (1 marks)

a) A firm stores records in a database. There are two tables in this database. One table
records details of all purchases. The other table stores customer personal information.

i) Why are codes used when entering data to a database? (2 marks)
ii) Customer-details records in the database are encrypted. What is encryption and
why are records encrypted? (4 marks)

b) Validation and verification are two different methods of controlling and detecting
errors. Describe how EACH of these is done.

c) You have been asked to compare software. Describe TWO advantages and TWO
disadvantages of:
i) Off the shelf software (2 marks)
ii) Bespoke software (2 marks)
d) Suggest TWO software method of preventing access to the firm’s database by
unauthorised staff. (2 marks)

e) What is a backup? Why is it done regularly? Give two suitable storage devices used for
backup. (4 marks)

package.
a) The integrated package has the following modules, word-processing,
spreadsheet, drawing, and database. Which of these modules would be used
for EACH of the following purposes:-

iii) Keeping records about the customers of a business. (1 mark)
