SECTION A

Question One

Explain briefly how the biological, chemical, physical pollution of water occurs?

Question Two

What do you understand by the terms water management and water pollution?
(10marks)

Question Three

Provide explanations for the following statements:-

Shallow wells are not suitable for public water supply
The formation artisan wells, the quality and quantity of water that may be obtained from it.

What is meant by sanitary protection of a well?

Question Four

Describe the disease cycle for any THREE of the following:-
Schistosomias, Guinea worm, Malaria, Cholera, Tracomae. (10marks)

Question Five

Explain the terms pure water, portable water and whole some water giving examples in the various uses of water i.e. domestic, commercial/ industrials
business trade or civic. (10marks)

Question Six
Calculate the dimensions of a rectangular plain sedimentation rank to treat 15x103 l/day. Assume a detention period of 6 hours and the velocity of flow 0.2m per second. (10marks)

Question Seven
Find out the quantity of alum required to treat 18 million litres of water per day. The dosage alum is 14mg/l. Also work out the amount of CO2 realized per m3 it water treated. (10marks)

Question Eight
A 500mm diameter circular pipe carries water at 20? c. Calculate the highest flow rate at which laminar flow can be expected, given the kinematic viscosity of water at 20?c r = 1.0 x 106 m2/s and NR = 2000. (10marks)

Question Nine
Explain the working and locations of air-valves; fire –hydrants? (10marks)

Question Ten
Describe briefly the sampling procedure for a sample to be used to determine the bacteriological quality of a drinking water supply. (10marks)

SECTION B

Question Eleven

Find the area of a slow sand filter required for a village having a population of 15000 with an average daily consumption of water of 160 litres as head.

Find the area of rapid sand filters required for a city of 18000 persons with a daily water demand of 200 litres per capita.

Question Twelve

A town has a population is 150000 people and requires water at a rate of 100 litres per capita per day. The disinfection of the Ts to be carried out with bleachingRodwer Containing 30% active chlorine. If the chlorine dosage required is0.3mg/l, calculate the quantity of bleaching powder per year.

Give THREE advantages of using bleaching powder as a disinfecting material.

Question Thirteen
Compute the discharge of 3m diameter, concrete pipe in its best condition carrying water at 10?c with a permissible lead ion of 2.5m/km of pipe length (Kinematic viscosity of water at 10?c V= 1.31 x 10-6m2/s and pipe roughren, e = 0.36mm). The moody diagram will be provided. (25marks)
