TAIFA TOURIST RESORT COMPLEX
The pledge by the government of Kenya in 2007 to the residents of Kitengela village of building a tourist resort complex was met with varied reactions. To the villagers although this would create jobs particularly for the youth, there was also fear that their long term cultural practices may be eroded. For the tourist sector, this was a dream come true. It was felt that this resort, borrowed from a swiss model would attract tourists worldwide. Many tourist firms bought land at exorbitant rates near the identified tourist resort site it was projected that by 2009, the complex would be in operation. The business fraternity was not left behind. Rental houses and luxurious hotels sprung up adjacent to the identified area. It was clear that the once “sleepy” Kitengela village had suddenly “woken up”. However, by 2010, despite the various promises and visits to the identified site by top government official and members of parliament, no tangible identified evidence of progress has been noted. The local residents are agitated and rumours circulating in Kitengela village indicate that the piece of land identified for the complex has been “grabbed” by some untouchable individuals in the government. The member of parliament for Kitengela is very worried since he is aware that your are undertaking a research course at KEMU, he has consulted and requested you to critically analyze the situation and prepare a report that will be present to the parliamentary reform committee in two weeks time.
