? Contains sections of running program which is temporarily idle
? Used to transfer data and programs into the hard disk drive and is small and portable
? Used by the operating system to interface every attached peripheral to the CPU
? Used by the operating system to change phone-line signals to computer readable signals and vice versa
? Used to store pre-fetched data awaiting processing
? Can transmit stored video, sound and text signals into the CPU and is fixed into the computer cabinet
? Is a section of the operating system always kept in RAM
? Is a name given to frequent movement of running programs to RAM and from hard disk and vice versa
? Keeps the address of the next instruction to be performed after the current one is through (5 marks)

(b) Name the likely part of the hardware or software which is causing the problem if:
(i) Messages are displayed onto the screen but the machine does not boot-up
(ii) The machine works for some time and then frequently hangs
(iii) The mouse keeps on running on the screen
(iv) The speed of processing suddenly drops
(v) The screen shows text and pictures but there is no sound ( 5 marks)
Question 2
(a) Explain the functions of the following as they relate to networks
(i) Router (2 marks)
(ii) Network Manager (2 marks)
(iii) Network operating system (2 marks)

(b) Your services are to be hired by the CEO of a small motor hardware store Kimbo Motors Ltd as a computer consultant. Kimbo wants to upgrade their old Intel Pentium III computer to a server to run the new version of windows (vista). They are worried about the speed of their processor, but believe it can be improved to run at 2.4GHZ or even faster. They equally believe they can add more RAM (512 MB) to one of its expansion slots so as to function as any modern Pentium IV processor if not better.

You are convinced it is not possible, but would want to prepare a half page report detailing your reasons. Your report should include the better option and its cost implications. (5 marks)

Drive Name Memory Capacity Range Transfer speed Material Used
HDD
USB Flash
DVD
(4 marks)
