Coordination Chemistry(Chem 410)

Course:Pure And Applied Sciences

Institution: Kenya Methodist University question papers

Exam Year:2012

TIME : 2 HOURS

Instructions: Answer Question ONE and any other TWO
Question One
Name the following co-ordination complexes. (10 Marks)
K4Fe(CN)6
Fe(ACO2)3
[Cr(CH3)5 (H2O)] [(NO3)3]
[Cr (NH3)4 Cl2]
(b) Explain the main sources of colour in complexes. Using the concept predict the collour of Te4+ complexes. (6 Marks)

(c) Write the oxidation states of the transition metals in each of the following compounds; (10 Marks)
NaMnO4
K2CrO4
Cr2O72-
CrO2
Mn2(CO)10
(d) A compound is found to have the traditional formulae P+Cl4.4NH3. If a mole of the compound is dissolved in water and silver nitrate added to the solutions. Two moles of silver chloride precipitate forms immediately. Use this information to determine the co-ordination number of platinium in the molecules, write its true formula, name the new compound you have written its formula. (4 Marks)

Question Two
Explain with examples the differences between d-block elements and transition elements.
(10 Marks)

When [Co (H2O)6]2+ is exposed to the conditions state below, different observations were made. Explains the observations with a help of an equation.
(10 Marks)
I mole of ammonia
4 moles of ammonia
Oxygen rich air

Questions Three
Most transition metals form more thanone oxidation state. One point about the oxidation states of transition metals abserves particular attention: Transitions metals ions with charges larges than + 3 cannot exist in a aqueous solutions. Consider the reactions in which manganese is oxidized from the +2 to the +7 oxidations state under aqueous conditions. Give account of what exactly happens here, include a balanced equation. (10 Marks)

Although coordination complexes are particularly important in the chemistry of the transition metals, some group members of main elements also form complexes. Discuss THREE main group elements that form co-ordination complexes.
(10 Marks)

Question Four
Define the following terms:
Complex ion
(2 Marks)
Ligand
(2 Marks)
Dentate Molecule
(2 Marks)

Using equations and named reagents discuss redox reactions in reference to transition elements.
(8 Marks)

State THREE uses of each of these metals.
(6 Marks0
Scandium
Cromium
Copper
