The cars that leave our street
Start up in different ways
some cough and splutter, then jerk into life,
Some tremble and shake, jump forward
then brake, some moan as if
they have belly ache, some shudder and rumble,
some bellow and grumble, some roar
with a burst of fire power, some shiver
and cower. Some creep along
as if something is wrong, some leap
with a spurt of speed, some need
the magic touch, the press of a button
flick over switch. Some purr along
without a hitch, smooth operators,
shiny and smug, some stubbornly refuse
to break into a chung. Some are well mannered,
quietly spoken, but one old car,
the one that’s mine, despite kicking,
pleading, coaxing, just can’t be woken!
