Question 1
a) Sunland insurance Ltd has been in business for the last 10 years and their customer base has increased tremendously. The biggest challenge the management is facing today is complaints from its loyal customers who feel that the level of customer service is deteriorating compared to a few years ago. They have engaged you as a research consultant to assess whether customers are dissatisfied with the current services and if so why. What research design (s) would you recommend? Justify your answer. (10 marks)
b) There are certain non-sampling errors that may occur when carrying out research. With relevant examples clearly highlight some of these errors and possible ways a researcher may use to avoid/eliminate them. (8 marks)
c) The marketing manager of Swara Millers intends to conduct a certain marketing research exercise for his firm. Discuss the FOUR factors that would influence the manager in making the decision on the sample size to use. (5 marks)
d) “It is not possible to develop a research report that is complete and concise at the same time”. Do you agree? Explain your answer (7 marks)

a) Discuss the circumstances when a researcher may find it inevitable to use a non-probability sample in research. (10 marks)
b) Define what the term Moderating and Extraneous variable means in research using relevant examples. (5 marks)
c) Explain what is meant by causal research design, highlighting the circumstances under which such research would be most appropriate. (5 marks)

a) Briefly explain the four levels of measurement from the lowest to the highest level. Make use of appropriate examples. (8 marks)
b) Mombasa Ltd has contracted you as a research consultant to undertake a research exercise for them. Briefly explain to the management the advantages and disadvantages of using secondary data as compared to primary data when conducting this exercise. (6 marks)
c) “Research is much concerned with fact finding, analysis and evaluation”. Expound on this statement. (6 marks)

b) With appropriate examples distinguish these three sampling techniques and illustrate how each technique is used in research

a) A third year student at KeMU has come to you for advice regarding the best way of systematically analyzing raw data which he has collected for his end of semester project. What advice would you give him and why? (15 marks)
b) Define the term hypothesis and discuss briefly the characteristics of a good hypothesis. (5 marks)
