Wireless Communications (Bbit 444) (Cisy 333)

Course:Computer Science & Business Information

Institution: Kenya Methodist University question papers

Exam Year:2012

TIME : 2 HOURS

Instructions:
Answer question and any other two questions.
Question One
State any two examples of wireless communication systems and describe the basic features of each.
(4 marks)
What is meant PAM and PCM? What is its application in GSM networks?
(5 marks)
Traffic engineering is a key issue for telecommunications network operators trying to keep customers happy while minimizing network investments. To ensure that customers get the required QoS then the network capacity should be higher than offered traffic, otherwise many users would not be able to get service because all lines would be occupied all the time. How high should the network capacity be? Why shouldn’t the capacity be equal to the subscriber base?
(3 marks)
To address the demerits of geosynchronous satellite, lower orbit LEO satellites, were though to be a better match for voice and data communication. What were the hinderances to this idea?
(6 marks)
Mobile IP/IP mobility is an LEFT standard communication protocol that is designed to allow mobile device users to move from one network to another while maintaining a permanent IP address. Explain the operational principles of this protocol.
(6 marks)
What is fading? What are its different types:
1. Based on multipath time delay spread. (3 marks)
2. Based on Doppler spread. (3 marks)

Question Two
How does the cellular network route on incoming call to a subscriber located anywhere in the network or even in a different country? What are the roles of HLR and VLR in the routing of an incoming cell?
(10 marks)
Mobile phone history is often divided into generations to mark significant step changes in capabilities as the technology improves. 3G telecommunications, for example, is a generation of standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunications service fulfilling the IMT-200 specification. Explain any three objectives of the IMT-200 specification.
(5 marks)

Question Three
Rooting is the task of directing data flows from source nodes to destination nodes while maximizing network performance. This is particularly hard in Att-WMNs. Why? Suggest a solution.
(6 marks)
Mobile cellular service providers may offer mobile QoS to customers just as the fixed line PSTN service providers and ISPs may offer QoS. However, mobility adds complications to the QoS mechanisms. How?
(5 marks)
Explain the working of any two wireless medium access techniques.

(4 marks)

Question Four
Mobile and wireless communications have become ubiquitous in the 21st century with the wide use of cellphone, personal digital assistants, and smart phones. The need for connectivity at any place and at any time is the defining feature for present and future wireless communications. The market for cellphone usage has seen a drastic increase in the last several years. These devices are needed, not only to communicate voice but also to send and receive text, video, and pictures. Considering the above developments highlight any three challenges facing mobile wireless communications radio resource management.
(7 marks)
What is handover? Explain the handover principle, that is, how handover is carried out in a cellular network.
(6 marks)
Explain the application of cordless phones.
(2marks)

Question Five
Described why WIMAX as a communication technology for wirelessly delivering high-speed internet service to large geographical areas has not been that successful.
(6 marks)
What is the difference between Baseband and Broadband wireless communication?
(4 marks)
Why should wireless communications networks be regulated? Explain any three reasons.
(5 marks)
