Question 1
Case study
Jet Airlines is a successful no frill’ airline from a regional airport in the UK on short-have routes to European destinations. Its founder, Ben, Mahon, recognized a shift in airline operations in the 1990s. Since the launch of Jet in 1996, it has continued to grow and return a profit when the rest of the airtime industry has been forced to downsize and diversity. Benz Mahorn recognized the advantage of operating at the lowest cost with the highest load factor.
The customer service approach adopted by Jet Airlines was thus radically difference from traditional airlines, as the passengers wanted nothing more than to fly cheaply, quickly and with the minimum of hassle. Jet Airlines increased its routes and enhanced its scheduling, thereby increasing its profit year in year. Recognizing this, a number of other ‘no frills airlines have been launched in the UK, and a number of major airlines have recognized the advantages of the ‘no frills’ market, and diversified. Jet Airlines is concerned about this increase in competition, as it has led to reduced passenger levels on certain routes. Jet has also experienced increasing employee turnover owing to poaching by a local competitor. This, together with an increase in customer complaints about unfriendly and inefficient staff, has led can no longer compete on price alone, and he believed that it is the Jet’s human resources that can be add extra value to the customer experience, and therefore retain Jet’s position as the number one ‘no frill’ airline in the UK.
Ben Mahom has introduced Jet’s Mission to all employees with a new corporate value programme. He is concerned, as he feels that a motivated and committed workforce, as well as assessing the human resource needs in the management of the company’s objective, is essential to the success of his strategy.
