KST 204: AGRICULTURAL MICROBIOLOGY

DATE: WEDNESDAY, 28TH MARCH 2012 TIME: 2.00 P.M. – 4.00 P.M.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Answer ALL questions in Section A and TWO questions in Section B.
Each question in section A has 5 marks (total 40 marks).

1. Explain why Gram negative bacteria are more serious threats to animal health and the

economy.

2. Describe the roles of bacterial cell walls.

3. Motility is an essential aspect of microbial biology. Describe how this is achieved in
bacteria.

4. Explain the importance of the surface area to volume ratio as an indicator of physiological
competence in microbial cell function.

5. Differentiate between:

a. heterotrophs and phototrophs

b. obligate and facultative anaerobes

c. halophiles and thermophiles

6. Explain the varying types of possible relationships between microbial symbionts.

7. Microbial organisms that more readily mix and exchange genes are better placed to cope
with changes in their ecologies. Discuss briefly.

8. Citing relevant examples, write short notes on biopiracy in relation to Kenya’s microbial
resources.
SECTION B: Answer only two questions, each 15 marks (total 30 marks)

9. Differentiate between fungi and bacterial species on the basis of morphology and
reproduction process. (15 marks)








10. Write notes on:

a. Lysogenic phages

b. Functioning of Golgi apparatus

c. Coenocytic cells

d. Binary fission

e. Capsomeres

11. Viruses can’t carry out most of the physiological functions common in other microbes, yet
they are highly lethal pathogens. Discuss the adaptations that confer this lethal competence.

12. Using an example of your choice, describe an agricultural enterprise based on application
of microbiology.
