SECTION A: Answer ALL questions in the spaces provided (5 marks) each)

1. Discuss water activity as a factor affecting growth and distribution of microorganisms.

2. State five characteristics of a good microbial indicator of water pollution.

3. Distinguish between the following terms:-
a) Lentic habitats and lotic habitats

b) Littoral zone and euphotic zone

c) Ammonification and nitrification

d) Autochthonous microorganisms and allochthonous microorganisms


e) Nueston and plankton

4. Discuss the effect of ultraviolet radiations on growth of microorganisms.

5. Describe the characteristics of the soil atmosphere as a microbial habitat.

6. Explain the membrane filter method for determining the coliform count.

7. Outline the method used in presumptive identification of rhizobia.

8. Describe the following advanced sewage treatment methods:-

a) Eletrodialysis

b) Reverse osmosis


SECTION B: Answer any ONE question in this section.

1. Discuss microbial communities of freshwater habitats.
2. Describe the different methods used in sludge and solid waste disposal.
3. Discuss commensalism in microbial populations.
