INSTRUCTIONS: Answer Question 1 [20 Marks] and any TWO other Questions [20 Marks each].
1- Bits n’ Pieces limited is a company that sells consumer electronics. The company has
sales personnel operating in major towns in Kenya. Until now, whenever a sales person
wants to make an inquiry about availability of stock or to find the detailed specification
of a product, they have to make a telephone call to the head office so that the products
can be searched and information relayed over the phone. This causes delays for sales
people when they have many responses to deal with. Additionally, the sales people would
like to make decisions about the stock items that should be reordered, and also to make
projections of anticipated sales from marketing campaigns that they carry out so as to try
and meet sales targets while staying within budget. The sales people on the ground would
thus like to interact with the head office databases directly and require both software and
hardware to enable this. The IT department wants to set up an automated system that will
allow sales people to carry out their inquiry and analysis activities. This project will be
rolled out to all sales people scattered country wide. You have been asked to recommend
the type of hardware and software that could be used in this setup:
i. Recommend at least three pieces of hardware that could be used in this
setup giving a reason for each. (5 Marks)
ii. Recommend two types of information systems that could be used to
enable the service to run effectively. (5 Marks)
iii. Recommend the information system resources that should be present in
order for the whole setup to function effectively. (10 Marks)
2- Explain the role and function of each of the following components found in a Personal
Computer:
i. The Basic Input Output System (3 Marks)
ii. The power supply (2 Marks)
iii. The Bus structures (2 Marks)
iv. The Chipset (2 Marks)
v. Random Access Memory (2 Marks)
vi. Cache Memory (1 Mark)
The most common secondary storage device attached to a computer internally is the hard
disk. The hard disk utilizes different technologies / interfaces to operate effectively.
Compare and contrast the ATA-2/ Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics to the Small
Computer Systems interface (SCSI). (8 Marks)
3a- What is application specific software? (2 Marks)
3b-Name and explain three types of system development software. (6 Marks)
3c- Clearly explain the difference between any four of the following five types of programming
languages, showing their major merits and demerits and giving an example of each (12 Marks).
a) Machine Language
b) Assembler Languages
c) High level language
d) Fourth generation languages
e) Object-oriented languages
4a- Differentiate between a local area network and a wide area network clearly explaining the
type of technology that each one uses.
4b-List the essential hardware resources that you could use to setup a high speed, secure Local
Area Network (LAN) within a building.
5- Organizations need information to maintain competitive advantage against their competitors.
i. List five qualities of good information in an organization (5 Marks)
ii. What is an organizational goal and what is a strategy (5 Marks)
iii. Name five organizational strategies that can be used to maintain competitive advantage
and the way information technology can be used to achieve those strategies. (10 Marks)
