QUESTION ONE
a) Account for the sources of population data. [5 marks]
b) Distinguish between the following sets of terms [15 marks]
(i) Defacto and Dejure Enumeration
(ii) Error of content and coverage errors
(iii) Crude rates and specific rates
(iv) Whipple’s index and Myer’s index
(v) Dependency ratio and General ratio.

c) Why have so many census resulted in the under enumeration of population?
What factors might lead to over enumeration? [10 marks]



QUESTION TWO
a) The population of Tanzania grew from 6449558 in 1959 to 9456466 in 1969.
Required:
(i) What was the average annual rate? [2 marks]
(ii) What was the estimated population in 1964 and 1967? [2 marks]
(iii) What was the estimated population in 1975 assuming the same average annual
rate of increase as occurred between 1959 and 1969? [2 marks]
(iv) How long will it take the population to double itself? (Assume census dates were
the same) [4 marks]

b) Would you recommend population registers as method for collecting migration
data for African countries? Discuss. [10 marks]



QUESTION THREE
a) Given that Ux is a polynomial in x of a second degree and denoting Ux + U(x + 1) by Ux'. Derive an expression for U2 and U4. Hence estimate the graduated female
population aged 65 – 69 in Ghana in 1947 from the following data. [10 marks]

b) Given infant deaths by age in the year 1950 and births in the years 1949 and 1950
as follows: Use the method of denominator related deaths to calculate infant
mortality rate.

Births in 1949 = 180,774 and Births in 1950 = 169,102. [10 marks]



QUESTION FOUR
a) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Cohort approach in the analysis of
fertility? [10 marks]
b) Out of 12,000 born; 130 die in the first month and the deaths diminish by the 6 in
each succeeding month.
(i) Find qo, the probability of dying in the first year of life correct to 2
decimal places.
(ii) Show that L(x) = 12,00 – 133x + 3x2 [10 marks]

a) (i) Outline the characteristics of a stable population. [4 marks]
(ii) Explain the uses of a stable population model. [4 marks]
