1. a) Briefly discuss “species extinction” as evidenced by record of fossil
remains. (7 marks)
b) Use specific examples to distinguish between “Deterministic” and
“Stochastic processes. (10 marks)
c) Explain why species extinction is favoured by isolated habitats.
(8 marks)

2. Identify any FIVE ecological factors that affect the rate of species extinction and
explain how these influence the rate of extinction. (15 marks)

3. a) Discuss the importance of World Conservation Union (IUCN) in the
conservation of endangered species. (8 marks)
b) Name one endangered plant specie from Kenya and briefly discuss why
the specie is considered endangered. (7 marks)

4. Using any selected threatened plant community, discuss the rationale for species
conservation. (15 marks)

5. a) Use relevant Kenyan examples to illustrate the role of CITES in species
conservation. (7 marks)
b) Discuss the merits and demerits of using CITES as an organization for
species conservation in Kenya. (8 marks
