1. a) i) Define and briefly discuss EIA outlining its importance.
ii) Discuss the role of consultation and public /stakeholder participation in an EIA process. At what stages of an EIA is the public involved/ consulted?
iii) Differentiate between an EIA and an EIS.
iv) Differentiate between screening and scoping in the EIA process.(20 marks)

b) Define the term mitigation as it relates to EIA. (4 marks)

c) Suggest possible mitigation measures for the following environmental impacts from an irrigation and drainage scheme:
i) Water quality problems for downstream users caused by irrigation return flow.
ii) Ground water depletion.
iii) Increase incidence of water related disease. (6 marks)

2. a) Explain how EIA fits in the concept of sustainable development. (6 marks)

b) Outline the key areas required during an EIA. (14 marks)

3. a) Define and briefly explain the role of each of the following participant in an EIA process
i) Proponent
ii) Licensing authority
iii) Lead expert
iv) The local community (10 marks)
b) Discuss the problems and challenges that are associated with EIA in developing countries. (10 marks)

4. Discuss the social impacts that could be associated with constructing a huge dam in a typical rural environment. (10 marks)

5. discuss the type of information found in an EIA report. (20 marks)
