INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question 1 and two others.

1 Answer question a, b and c below:
a) Write down only the verb phrase in each sentence below and after it indicate if it is intransitive, transitive or linking. (10 marks)
I. On Sunday we will be going for a picnic.
II. The birds seem strangely quite this morning.
III. Redeem these coupons for valuable merchandise.
IV. This has been a special day.
V. The screen writer has been making many script changes.
b) Write and name the phrase underlined in each sentence below, and then indicate its function in the sentence. (10 marks)
I. The nurse gave the starving children some food.
II. They watched the man excavating gemstones.
III. Maasai women wear beads round their necks.
IV. Sleek looking goats roamed the streets.
V. The dog with big ears belongs to my brother.
c) Rewrite the subordinate clause in each of the following sentences and indicate if it is a noun, adjectival or adverbial. (10 marks)
I. Unfortunately I don’t know whether I can afford basketball camp.
II. Whoever finds your wedding ring will surely leave it in lost and found.
III. The lady who needs your babysitting services is Mrs. Ngonda.
IV. Workers must wear hard hats in this area so that everyone is safe.
V. Most applicants whom we hire are available for work on weekends.
2. Answer both questions (a) and (b).
a) I. Define primary auxiliary verbs.
II. Select any two primary auxiliary verbs, and for each, write two sentences to illustrate how it can function. (10 marks)
b) Distinguish between ‘subject’ and ‘subject word’ in a sentence.
Support your answer by writing two sentences which clearly illustrate the two terms. In the sentence highlight the terms stated above. (10 marks)
3. Identify any five functions of a clause, and for each write two illustrative sentences. Highlight the function you are referring to in each sentence.

4. Describe sentences from the semantic aspect and give the corresponding function of each of the sentence. Exemplify each sentence appropriately.

5. Explain how the grammatical units are like of natural objects or items in the world of technology. (20 marks)
