INSTRUCTIONS: Answer questions ONE and any other TWO questions.
1. Compulsory
A. Many words in English can belong to different classes. Identify five examples of such words and for each one of them write two sentences showing how it can occur in two different classes underline all the words, and state the class illustrated in each sentence. (10 marks)
B. Give any FIVE derivational suffixes that can help us to identify adjectives. Illustrate your answer. (10 marks)
C. EITHER
a) What meanings can be expressed by the following modals:
a. Could
b. May
c. Can
d. Must
e. Should (10 marks)
OR
b) Rewrite only the underlined part of the sentence below. After each indicate if the part is phrase or clause. If the part is phrase state what type is, and if it is clause, indicate its function in the sentence.
i. they enjoy gospel music
ii. that the guest of honor failed to come disappointed everyone.
iii. The field was too wet for the boy to play on.
iv. The choir sang too softly to be heard from the back
v. I knew that you would come. (20 marks)
2. in a noun phrase, we can usually identify three functions. Which are they and how is each distinct? (20 marks)
3. Why is the verb phrase considered the most central element in a phrase? Discuss any unique features of the verb phrase. (20 marks)
4. Identify any FIVE types of adverbial clauses and illustrate their usage in sentences. (20 marks)
5. EITHER
Using two examples of each distinguish between declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamative sentences. What is the semantic function of each. (20 marks)

Define each of the following elements of sentence, and after each definition, write a sentence to illustrate the element in question by underlining and labeling it appropriately:
