Call for early sex education

A reproductive health researcher is pushing for early sex education to help curb transmission of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS among adolescents.
The lead researcher in a study released at a Kenya Medical Training college (KMTC) conference, Ms Mary Nyambok, said unprotected sex places many adolescents at risk of contracting these infections.
In view of these, she says sex should be introduced to this vulnerable group early. We cannot deny that youngsters are having sex, said Ms Nyambok.
In the study, 19% of adolescents reported never having used condoms, 15% rarely use them and 32% always use them. Being open about the physical and biological changes in their bodies and answering their questions honestly will cultivate a culture of trust and openness. Ms Nyambok a maths and biology teacher at a Nairobi school asserts.
In her study, she discovered that adolescents found it difficult to purchase condoms due to embarrassment. We get embarrassed buying condoms from the shops as the owners who are friends to our parents or parents to friends or senior members of society, can report us to our parents or just look at us with scornful curiosity, one of the adolescents from a mixed day school says.
According to Ms Alice Ongera, the lead researcher in the study, adolescent sexuality is a public health concern as more than half of new infections occur among young people aged 15 – 24 years. According to Ms Ongera 44% of adolescents aged 15-19 have had sex.
