Strategies for Preparing and Sitting for an Examination in Tertiary Institutions

This article is meant to help students in universities and other tertiary institutions to effectively prepare for examinations in order to overcome the challenge of panic and failure in their examination. Examination is a way of measuring how much the student has learnt during a given period. There are five strategies for examination preparation as discussed below:


1)AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSE

Examination preparation begins at the beginning of the course.The following are the activities students should engage in during this period.
*Students should get the course outline or understand the scope of the course.

*Students should understand the mode of evaluation,that is the format of the questions.

*They should understand the general expectations to meet such as pass mark,take away assignments and Continuous assessment tests.

*They should have a good and comprehensive reading list.

2) DURING TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS

During this period a student gathers knowledge as the teaching and learning process takes place.Students engage in the following activities during the course:

*They attend lectures in time and without failure.

*They listen attentively and take notes

*They also ensure that all assignments are done on time.

*They engage in academic problem solving(Identifying the nature of assignments,break them into pieces,identify correct steps to follow in solving the problem such as experiments).They should collect all relevant materials,Plan how to solve problems and present the solution of the problem



3) DURING REVISION PERIOD

This is the time for final consolidation and organization of the various academic materials such as lecture notes,handouts,research notes and past papers.

4)ON THE EVE OF THE EXAM

Learners should take break from serious revision because he or she might panic.During this time,learners should do the following:

*Check the examination timetable to confirm the venues,time of the examination and the paper

*Organize any necessary equipment such as pens,erasers,pencils,examination card,student identification card.

*Revising their key summaries briefly.

*Students should take a good rest


5) DURING THE ACTUAL EXAMINATION

DAY

During this stage:

*Students should arrive at the examination venue in good time to avoid panicking.

*Read the instructions Carefully both general which concerns the whole paper and specific which affect each question.

*Choosing questions correctly

*Making outlines for each question.
In conclusion,learners who carefully take this stages into account eventually perform better in their examinations.
