MPs' quest for guns selfish and myopic
The Eighth Parliament will surely go down in history as the most self-serving
ever. Having raised their own salaries and other emoluments twice in total
disregard to the parlous state in which the economy is, our MPs now want to
arm themselves with guns and surround themselves with bodyguards at the
taxpayers' expense.
The passage of the motion by more than 40 MPs, the majority of them from the
Opposition, underlines one significant fact. Though a feeling of insecurity has
infested every sector of society, legislators have come to believe they are at
greater risk than anyone else.
Why else would they think they deserve guns and armed bodyguards more than
do magistrates and judges, who, by the very nature of their jobs, are a lot more
vulnerable? And what makes them think possession of lethal weapons will ever
deter anybody determined to eliminate them for political reasons or during
normal thuggery?
In fact, the mere fact that everyone will now know they possess guns might
make them the targets of gangsters bent on acquiring additional weapons. The
gagsters might actually shoot first.
It is instructive that the government was against the motion and that no cabinet
Minister voted for it. Their reasoning was impeccable - that it will be a very
expensive undertaking to arm Mps and give them bodyguards.
What the opponents of the gun legislation should have also said is that the MPs
may represent the people in Parliament, but their lives are not any more valuable
than those of any of their voters - nor are they at greater risk. While we
understand their concern, we are all at the mercy of gangsters but we cannot all
demand to arm ourselves.
Second, it is not certain MP scan be trusted with firearms. On many occasions in
the past some have exchanged fisticuffs in Parliament and even chewed one
another's ears in fits of anger. What would happen were such people to be
armed with deadly weapons?
This is the kind of motion that should never have been passed, and it is one we
hope will not go beyond this stage. If it did, Kenyans can only hope it will be
denied assent. .
There is a provision for Kenyans who fear for their lives for any reason, MPs
included, to acquire weapons following the right procedures and after fulfilling all
the conditions. Let them exhaust those procedures first before they try to turn
this country into a version of the American Wild West.
