QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

1. (a) Simplify the following:

(i) ((3)(-4)(-12))/((-2)(-6)(-24)) [3 Marks]

(ii) ((40)(-3)(4)(-12))/((-8)(3)(-120)) [3 Marks]

(b) Solve the equations

(i) 4^(x+1)=32 [3 Marks]

(ii) ?2x?^2+x-6=0 [3 Marks]

(c) State the equation of a line through points A( 3 4) and B (4 6), hence or otherwise
state the equation of a line perpendicular to line AB through point B [4Marks]
(d) Given the centre of a circle is (-3 2) and radius is 3 cm, state the equation of the
circle. [3 Marks]

(e) Solve the equation.
Log?2(x^2-9)=4. [3 Marks]

(f) The volume of a cylindrical bottle is 1540 cm3, if its diameter is 14 cm calculate the height of the milk mark in the bottle. [3 Marks]

(g) If you wake up at 3.30 am and sleep at 7.30 pm, how much money do you get
if you are paid Ksh 30/= per hour? [3 Marks]

(h) In how many ways can the letter in the word DGA DGA be arranged? [2 Marks]

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

(a) Solve the equation:

(i) (243)^y=9 [3 Marks]

(ii) 8^(2x+1/3)=128 [3 Marks]

(b) Given f(x)=x^3-5x+2 and g(x)=x-2 obtain

(i) (f(x))/(g(x))

(ii) (f(4))/(g(4))

(iii) gof(x)and gof(4)

(c) Given log_2?(x+4)=2-log_2?x obtain the value of x. [4 Marks]

(d) If one kilogram of beans costs Ksh 240 and that of maize costs Ksh 160. How
much would one pay for 50kgs of mixture of maize and beans once the mixing is one at the ratio maize to beans.3:2? [4 Marks]

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)

3. (a) Give two examples of each of the following numbers.

(i) Even numbers
(ii) Prime numbers
(iii) Odd numbers. [6 Marks]

(b) In how many ways can a committee of 5 persons be formed from 4 men and 4
women if at least 2 women must be in the committee. [4 Marks]

(c) State the radius and Co-ordinates of the centre of a circle given by
x^2+y^2+6x-2y+1=0 . Identify the four major points on the circumference
of their circle. [6 Marks]

(d) Given the arithmetic series
3 + 9 + 15 + - - - - - - - - - -

(i) Write down the 10th term

(ii) State the sum of the 1st ten terms in this series. [4 Marks]

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)

4. (a) Indicate the region given by the inequalities shown below.

(i) x+2y=6
(ii) x=0
(iii) y=0

State the co-ordinates of two points in the given region. [7 Marks]

(b) Solve the equation:

(i) x^2-x-12=0 [3 Marks]

(ii) (1+1/4 x)^5=32 [3 Marks]

(c) Indicate the value of X in the equality -7=3x+2=11. [3 Marks]

(d) Sketch the curve y=?2x?^2-1 for-2=x=2. [4 Marks]
