1. (a) Giving examples of farm animals where possible, describe what you understand
by the term Non-ruminant animals. [5 Marks]


(b) Outline five benefits and five challenges of keeping rabbits. [5 Marks]


2. (a) Explain and give an example, the meaning of “dual purpose” in relation to
chickens?

(b) What is the purpose of turning eggs in an incubator? [1 Mark]


(c) What is the main difference between Starter feed, Grower Feed and Layer Feed
for feeding chicks, pullets and laying hens? [1 Mark]


(d) How can one tell if baby chicks under a brooder stove or light have the proper temperature? [1 Mark]
(e) Below is a digestive system of poultry. Name and give the functions of parts 4,5.11,14. [4 Marks]












(f) Percentage fertility is the percentage of egg that are fertile and should be about 90-95% for a good flock. Describe two factors that influence fertility in poultry. [2 Marks]

3. (a) Animal shelter is critical in improving livestock productivity. List five important
factors to consider in livestock housing. [5 Marks]


(b) Reproduction contributes greatly to a successful pig enterprise. Enumerate on the
common preparations before farrowing. [5 Marks]

4. Give a scientific explanation for the following:

(a) The practice of housing a boar near sows and the double-serving of sows in pig
breeding enterprise. [1 Mark]


(b) Maintaining a constant temperature in a pig farrowing unit. [1 Mark]

(c) The practice in abbatoirs of fasting animals before slaughter and of allowing the
carcasses to hang for some days before sale. [2 Marks]


(d) The function of a gizzard in poultry. [1 Mark]


(e) Absconding in bees colonies. [1 Mark]
