SECTION A

1. (i) Explain the contextual foundation of the MASS SOCIETY concept. [5 Marks]


(ii) Mass society theory makes several basic assumptions about individuals, the role of mass media and the nature of social change. Discuss TWO of these assumptions in detail. [15 Marks]


2. “Advertising is the ultimate cultural commodity”. Discuss the full implication of this statement. [15 Marks]


3. The media literacy movement has begun using practical examples; explain your understanding of this declaration. [10 Marks]
SECTION B

4. Noam Chomsky’s film, Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media, makes a clear statement about the impact of mass media on shaping society’s priorities. Highlight Chomsky’s notions as portrayed in the film and then evaluate their relevance in understanding the position of mass media in the Kenyan society. [20 Marks]


5. Audience researchers have shifted from viewing the audience as passive to respecting its ‘activity’ during the consumption of media products. Apply the Users-and-Gratifications theory to explain the basis of this shift. [20 Marks]
