Answer Question 1 and two other Questions

Question One (30 MARKS) COMPULSORY
a) (i) Briefly define the term research. (2 mks)
(ii) Outline possible motivations of doing research. (4 mks)
b) Distinguish between Research and scientific method (6 mks)
c) What is a research design? Give features of a good design. (7 mks)
d) Define the following terms:
(i) Skewness
(ii) Kurtosis
(iii) Charles spearman’s coefficient of correlation. (6 mks)
e) Mugoya construction Company has estimated the average quantity of Ballast
extracted from the Quarry to be 36.8 tons per shift and the sample standard
deviation to be 2.8 tones per shift based upon a random selection of 4 shifts.
Construct a 90 per cent confidence interval around this estimate. (5 mks)

Question Two (20 MARKS)
a) Briefly state the points to consider when selecting a research problem. (6 mks)
b) What do you mean by ‘sample design’? What points should be taken into
consideration by a researcher in developing a sample design for her/her research
project? (14 mks)

Question Three (30 MARKS)
a) Discuss personal interview method as a method of collecting primary data. State
its chief merits and Demerits. (15 mks)
b) Differentiate between Descriptive statistics and Inferential statistics. (5 mks)

Question Four (20 MARKS)
a) Why is tabulation considered essential in a research study? Narrate the
characteristics of a good table. (10 mks)
b) Distinguish between:
(i) Statistic and Parameter (2 mks)
(ii) point estimate and interval estimate (2 mks)
(c) Explain briefly students’ t – distribution. (6 mks)

Question Five (20 MARKS)
a) Explain the meaning and significance of the concept “standard error” in sampling
analysis (10 mks)
b) Determine the size of the sample for estimating the true weight of the cereal
containers for the universe with N = 5000 on basis of the following information:
(i) the variance of weight = 4 ounces on the basis of past records.
(ii) estimate should be with 0.8 ounces of the true average weight with 99%
probability.
Will there be a change in the size of the sample if we assume infinite
population in the given case? If so, explain by how much? (10 mks)
