SECTION A: Answer All Questions in this Section (40 Marks)

1. (a) Define the term proximate analysis. [2 Marks]

(b) Feedstuffs are classified into 8 classes based on their nutrient content. List any
four such classes. [4 Marks]

(c) List any four factors to consider when sampling feedstuffs for proximate analysis.
[4 Marks]

2. (a) State any four deficiency symptoms of retinol in farm animals. [4 Marks]

(b) Bloat is one of the nutritional disorders wide spread both in Kenya and other parts
of the world. Briefly discuss two major factors that affect bloat occurrence and give two ways of preventing the occurrence of disorder. [6 Marks]

3. (a) State four benefits that microorganisms derive from their symbiotic relationship
with ruminants. [4 Marks]


(b) Differentiate between hind gut and fore gut fermenters giving two examples in
each case. [6 Marks]

4. A farmer has four dairy cattle. Given that 168 litres of water is required to sustain the
animals in a day, calculate:

(a) Amount of dry matter required to sustain the animals in a day. [3 Marks]

(b) The average body weight of each of the our animals. [4 Marks]

(c) Given that the farmer has Nandi seteria as source of pasture for animals and that
through analysis the pasture was fond to have 78% moisture, 11% protein, 0.8% calcium and 0.4% phosphorus. Comment on supplementation. [3 Marks]

SECTION B: Answer any Two Questions (30 Marks)

5. (a) Give any three factors that influence water intake in farm animals.
[3 Marks]

(b) A part from genetic makeup, adequate feed intake is essential in achieving
optimum animal performance. Discuss four mechanisms by which feed intake in farm animals is controlled. [12 Marks]

6. (a) Minerals are inorganic elements required by farm animals for efficient
functioning of the body systems. Discuss the general functions of minerals in farm animals. [9 Marks]

(b) List any six factors that determine the mineral content of livestock feed.
[6 Marks]

7. (a) Inclusion level of lipids in livestock ration should be restricted at 5% and 10% for
ruminants and non-ruminants respectively. Explain the consequences associated with exceeding these dietary levels. [6 Marks]

(b) Discuss process undergone by lipids in rumen upon ingestion by ruminants.
[9 Marks]
