PART A: COMPULSORY QUESTIONS 30 MARKS

1. Define the following terms:

2. Explain the effect of tillage operation over the following soil characteristic.

(i) Soil tilth [2 Marks]

(ii) Soil moisture [2 Marks]

(iii) Soil aeration [2 Marks]

3. (i) Compare and contrast primary and secondary tillage. [2 Marks]
(ii) List three (3) implements that are used for primary tillage. [3 Marks]

4. State and explain the function of the various parts of a combined harvester.

PART B: ANSWER ANY TWO QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRIES 20 MARKS.

5. (i) Discuss four (4) economic importance of farm machinery use in a developing
country such as Kenya. [8 Marks]

(ii) Machinery selection is dependent on a number of factors. Briefly explain any five
(5) factors one should consider when selecting appropriate size of farm machinery. [10 Marks]

(iii) Soil tillage is one of the most expensive and critical operation conducted in the
farm each season. State the two main aims of land preparation. [2 Marks]

6. (i) Briefly explain five (5) basic functions of seeding – planting equipment.
[10 Marks]

(ii) State the three (3) types of ground wheel drives commonly used to turn the
seeding mechanism. [3 Marks]

(iii) With the aid of a clearly labeled diagram, show the main parts of typical
moldboard plow bottom with funnel type share, showing method of measuring suction when no rear furrow wheels or depth control devices are used.

7. (i) Briefly explain the main steps involved in a boom sprayer calibration.
[8 Marks]

(ii) State the three (3) main functions of a forage harvester. [3 Marks]

(iii) With the aid of a clearly labeled diagram show the major parts of a self propelled
forage harvester and state their functions. [9 Marks]
