SECTION A: Answer all questions in this section (40 marks)

1. (a) Define the following terms as used in ruminant production:

(b) Giving examples, differentiate between pituitary hypoplasia and achondroplasia.
[6 Marks]

2. (a) Small holder/ village system is one of the production system used in ruminant
production. Outline any four features of this system. [4 Marks]

(b) Differentiate between sheep and goats. [6 Marks]

3. (a) List any five productive traits considered during selection in livestock.
[5 Marks]

(b) List five benefits that microorganisms derive through their symbiotic relationship
with ruminants. [5 Marks]

4. (a) List two types of weaning practiced by dairy cattle farmers. [2 Marks]

(b) Describe four criteria for weaning calves. [8 Marks]


SECTION B: Answer any two questions (30 marks)

5. (a) During health inspection of his donkeys as one of the routine practices on his
farm, a farmer noticed thick creamy white discharge form the nose of his donkey and the donkey was coughing persistently.

(i) Name the possible disease the donkey was suffering form [1 Mark]

(ii) Give any other one symptom of the disease a part form the over
mentioned ones. [1 Mark]

(iii) Give one treatment measure of the disease. [1 Mark]

(b) Discuss four economic uses of donkeys. [8 Marks]

(c) Give two reasons why mules are more common than hinnies. [4 Marks]

6. (a) Discuss any six economic importances of ruminants. [12 Marks]

(b) List any three adaptations that enable dromedary camels to survive in Arid and
semi arid regions of Kenya. [3 Marks]

7. (a) Outline nine steps followed when machine milking dairy animals. [9 Marks]

(b) Describe three post milking activities. [6 Marks]
