SECTION A: Short Answer Questions (30 Marks)

1. Differentiate between the following terms as applied in genetics. [5 Marks]

(a) Test cross and Backcross
(b) Molecular genetics and evolutionary genetics
(c) Continuous and discontinuous variations
(d) Sporophyte and gametophyte generation
(e) Dihybrid and Trihybrid crosses.

2. (a) Explain Mendel’s law of segregation . [2 Marks]

(b) List and state the functions of three types of RNA in a cell. [3 Marks]

3. Name five stages of prophase 1 cell division and state one activity that occur in each of
the stages. [5 Marks]

4. In the fruitfully, Drosophila Melanogaster, blackbody is recessive to normal gray body. If you are given a male with a gray body how would you determine its genotype.

5. State five assumptions of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium model [5 Marks]

6. Two curly winged flies, when mated, produce sixty one curly and thirty- five straight winged progeny. Use a punnet square to test whether these results agree with Mendel’s 3:1 ration hypothesis
