QUESTION ONE (COMPULSORY) -30 MARKS

(a) Distinguish the following statistical terms.

(i) Census and sample survey
(ii) Continuous variable and discrete variable
(iii) Primary source and secondary source of obtaining data
(iv) Class limits and class boundaries
(v) Descriptive statistics and inference statistics. [10 Marks]


(b) The following are weights in (kgs) recorded for 50 pigs during last years Embu Annual ASK show.

Arrange the above data in a frequency distribution table with tally weights consisting of 9 class intervals. Hence draw up the cumulative frequency table (less than) for the data.

(c) (i) Give three advantages of diagrammatic representation of statistical data over
tabular presentation [3 Marks]

(ii) Name any three different types of diagrams commonly used in representation of
data. [3 Marks]

(d) Calculate the mean absolute deviation of the following data set.
12,18,20,10,36 hence find its standard deviation. [5 Marks]

(e) The following table gives details of prices and quantities sold for two particular items in a department store over the last two years.

(a) Outline the uses of statistics in each of the following:
(i) Government
(ii) Business / Industry
(iii) Science and Research. [10 Marks]

(b) The table below gives the ages of drivers of cars used in the Ministry of Agriculture during the Narc Government.

Represent the above information on a pie-chart. [4 Marks]

(c) Draw a cumulative frequency curve (Ogive) form below for the following frequency distribution.

Hence determine the median from the Ogive. [6 Marks]

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)

(a) Three representatives are to be selected randomly from a group of 7 girls and 8 boys. Calculate the probability of selecting,

(i) All the three being girls [3 Marks]

(ii) Two girls and one boy [4 Marks]

(iii) Atmost two boys. [5 Marks]

(b) In a livestock research station a new drug for foot and mouth disease is being treated. A sample of 42 calves were diagnosed to have the disease. Eighteen (18) calves were treated with the drug and the rest were not.

(I) Calculate the probability that a calf picked at random is;

(i) Treated with the drug [1 Mark]

(ii) Not treated with the drug [1 Mark]

(II) If a calf is treated, the probability of dying is 1/8 while if not treated the probability is 3/10. Calculate the probability that a calf picked at random from the 42 calves is.

(i) Treated with the drug and will die. [2 Marks]

(ii) Not treated with the drug and will die. [2 Marks]

(iii) Not treated with the drug and will not die. [2 Marks]

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)

(a) Distinguish moving averages and index numbers. Give the important of each of this.
[4 Marks]

(b) The data below shows the milk production of a farmer (in litres) over a given year.

(b) What purpose does a measure of dispersion serve? What are the different measures of dispersion? [4 Marks]

(d) The following table gives the frequency distribution of yearly turnover in (£, 000) by 100 firms in a country.
