INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This paper contains SEVEN (7) questions.
2. Answer ALL questions in Section A and any TWO (2) questions in Section B.
3. Shown in parenthesis are marks for each question.


SECTION A:

QUESTION ONE:

With the aid of diagrams, explain the operation of a four-stroke cycle petrol engine.
[8 marks]

QUESTION TWO:

The compression ratio of a six-cylinder “Square engine” of capacity 2.25 litres is 8.5 to 1. Determine the following for this engine.

(i) The cylinder bore in centimeters [3 marks]

(ii) The thickness of metal that would be removed from the top face of the cylinder block to increase the compression ratio to 9 to 1. (Note for a square engine the bore is equal to the stroke, 1 litre – 106mm3). [6 marks]



QUESTION THREE:

Explain FIVE (5) major functions of engine lubricating oil as it circulates within the engine.
[7 ½ marks]
QUESTION FOUR:

Explain the term “PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE”. List four reasons for preventive maintenance of a machine such as a tractor/vehicle. [5 ½ marks]

SECTION B:

QUESTION FIVE:

(a) (i) Define the term velocity ratio as applied in power transmission. [2 marks]

(ii) A gearbox is driven in second gear. The layout is as indicated in the figure below, where the constant-mesh gears A and B have 15 and 32 teeth respectively. The second gear D on the main shaft has 30 teeth and meshes with the countershaft gear C having 16 teeth. Calculate:

- The second gear ratio
- The propeller shaft speed for an engine speed of 4000 rev/min [3 marks]
























(b) Explain SEVEN advantages of power transmission by belts as compared to power transmission by chain and sprocket and gears. [7 marks]

(c) Explain the purpose of the differential in a vehicle’s drive train. [4 marks]

(a) (i) Describe FOUR (4) major functions of tyres on a vehicle. [4 marks]

(ii) Explain two types of abnormal tyre wear and mention the causes of each
type of wear. [4 marks]


(b) Define the following terms as applied to a vehicle:

(i) Tractor ballasting [2 marks]
(ii) Wheel track [2 marks]
(iii) Wheel base [2 marks]
(iv) Weight transfer [2 marks]
(v) Wheel slip [2 marks]


(c) Differentiate between a spur gear and a helical gear. [2 marks]


QUESTION SEVEN:

(a) Explain FIVE major reasons for mechanizing agriculture. [10 marks]

(b) Explain the importance of the construction materials in the brake/clutch friction
lining. [5 marks]

(c) Define the following terms related to engine fuels:

(i) Flash point [2 marks]
(ii) Ignition temperature [2 marks]
(iii) Calorific value [1 mark]
