1. This paper contains SEVEN (7) questions.
2. Answer ALL questions in Section A and any TWO (2) questions in Section B.
3. Shown in parenthesis are marks for each question.

SECTION A:

QUESTION ONE:

(a) Explain the five factors affecting the choice of materials for a construction job. [5 marks]


(b) Define the following wood characteristics:

(i) Strength [1 mark]
(ii) Hardness [1 mark]
(iii) Stiffness [1 mark]
(iv) Toughness [1 mark]
(v) Warping [1 mark]


QUESTION TWO:

Calculate the amount of materials needed to construct a rectangular concrete floor 7.5 metres by 4.0 metres and 7 centimetres thick. Use a nominal mix of 1:3:6 50 kilograms of cement is equal to 37 litres. [10 marks]
QUESTION THREE:

(a) Hand mixing of concrete is normally adopted on small jobs. Explain the recommended hand mixing method. [4 marks]

(b) Explain the importance of the “slump test” for wet concrete mix. [1 mark]

QUESTION FOUR:

(a) Explain briefly the following types of nails used in construction.

(i) Concrete nails [ ½ mark]
(ii) Roofing nails [ ½ mark]
(iii) Clout nails [ ½ mark]
(iv) Panel pins [ ½ mark]

(b) With the aid of a diagram, name the four zones in farmstead planning and indicate
the activities in each zone. [3 marks]

SECTION B:

QUESTION FIVE:

(a) A brick pier is 0.7 metre square and 3 metres high and weighs 19kN/m3. It is supporting an axial load from a column of 490kN. The load is spread uniformly over the top of the pier, so the arrow shown in the diagram below merely represents the resultant of the load.

Calculate (a) the stress in the brickwork immediately under the column, (b) the stress at the bottom of the pier. [10 marks]



(b) Draw a structural framework (truss) with eleven members. Indicate the members subjected to compression loads and members subjected to tensile loads on the truss.

(c) Explain the following types of building walls:

(i) Masonry wall [1 ½ marks]

(ii) Frame wall [1 ½ marks]


QUESTION SIX:

(a) (i) List FIVE factors affecting the quality of the environment in agricultural
buildings. [5 marks]

(ii) List TWO functions of ventilation in the environment of farm buildings.
[2 marks]

(b) With the aid of a diagram show the basic parts of a ventilated maize crib for drying maize on cobs [10 marks]

(c) Explain the functions of the following structures in a dairy farm:

(i) Cattle race [1 ½ marks]

(ii) Cattle crush [1 ½ marks]


QUESTION SEVEN:

(a) Draw a simple zero grazing unit for the small holder (a plain view). [5 marks]

(b) (i) Discuss the qualities for a siting cattle dip construction. [5 marks]

(ii) Describe the following housing systems for layers.

- Semi-intensive system [2 ½ marks]

- Deep litter system [2 ½ marks]

(c) (i) Give FIVE objectives of fencing on a firm. [2 ½ marks]

(ii) List FIVE types of wire fences most commonly used on farms. [2 ½ marks]
