INSTRUCTIONS:

SECTION A: Answer all the questions (30 Marks)

1. Distinguish between biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. [4 marks]

2. Explain how green plants:

(a) Use energy from the sun to support animal life on earth. [1 mark]
(b) Support nutrient cycling [1 mark]
(c) Contribute to world water cycles [1 mark]

3. In a field experiment, an ecology class came up with the following observations in a forest ecosystem near their college; there was 5 times more green plants biomass than herbivores biomass and similarly close to 8 times more the biomass of herbivores when compared to carnivores.

(a) Explain this occurrence [2 marks]

(b) It is believed that if human beings concentrate on eating green plants, it is beneficial to them and the environment. Explain why. [2 marks]

4. Explain ecological succession. [6 marks]

5. State and briefly explain various factors that may limit terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem production. [4 marks]


6. (a) Explain the optimal foraging theory. [2 marks]

(b) Why does foraging behaviour of juveniles differ from adult animals? [3marks]

(c) Highlight the advantages and disadvantages of group living. [4 marks]


SECTION B: Answer two questions only (40 Marks)

7. Discuss how human population growth and activities affect the ecology of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. [20 marks]

8. Giving examples, describe different types of organism interactions occurring in any given ecosystem. [20 marks]

9. Giving examples, explain how understanding of ecology can aid us in management and conservation of natural resources. [20 marks]
