SECTION A:

QUESTION ONE:

(a) Why is it important to develop methods and structures for effective use on the farm?

(b) Discuss Five (5) defects that determine timber selection for construction work.
[5 marks]
QUESTION TWO:

(a) Explain FIVE (5) advantages of earth as a building material. [5 marks]

(b) Discuss the importance of soil stabilization when earth is used as a building
material. [5 marks]

QUESTION THREE:

(a) Explain the following types of applied loads of a permanent constructions:-

(i) Dead loads [2 marks]
(ii) Wind loads [2 marks]
(iii) Imposed loads [2 marks]
(b) Discuss the importance of prefabrication in building construction. [4 marks]
QUESTION FOUR:

(a) List FIVE (5) types of activities and installations in farm buildings that constitute special fire hazards. [5 marks]

(b) Describe curing concrete process. [5 marks]

SECTION B:

QUESTION FIVE:

(a) List down FIVE (5) important factors related to reinforced concrete. [5 marks]

(b) Draw a three-bedroomed farm house with living room, kitchen, and dining room, indicating the dimensions. [10 marks

QUESTION SIX:

(a) Assume a 1:3:5 cement-sand-stone concrete mix by volume using naturally moist aggregates and adding 62 litres of water. 2 bags of cement are used.

Additional assumptions

Bulk density of the sand: 1400kg/m3
Bulk density of stones: 1600kg/m3
Solid density of cement: 3100kg/m3

Calculate the following in the mix.

(i) Volume of the aggregate [3 marks]
(ii) Weight of the aggregates [4 marks]
(iii) Amount of water contained in the aggregate [3 marks]

(b) All farm buildings will require some repair and maintenance. Discuss. [5 marks]

QUESTION SEVEN:

(a) Discuss the environmental and space housing requirements for dairy cattle. [5 marks]

(b) Draw a slatted floor house for 50 layers. [5 marks]

(c) (i) What is the purpose of a man pass on a fence line? [1 mark]

(ii) With the aid of a diagram, show one type of a man pass on a fence
line. [4 marks
