Three students on the topic “preparation of sulphur (IV)
oxide”.
(a) Explain why it is necessary to preview the
demonstration.
(b) During the practical a student asks “What is
the conclusive test for sulphur (iv) Oxide gas?” Outline the test
you would perform in response.
(c) Using a sketch, explain
how a modern laboratory design facilitates the Teacher
demonstration.
(d) Justify the inclusion of the topic “Sulphur
and its components” in Kenya Chemistry syllabus. [20 marks]

Q2. Describe the explanations you would offer to the following
beginning (novice) teachers.
Teacher A: Prefers to use only
charts and never models as teaching aids.
Teacher B: Does not store chemicals in any order.
Teacher C: Is not aware of
the components of the chemistry content at secondary school
level. [15 marks]
Q3. The Kenya syllabus is based on the
“objectives model”.
(a) Outline the main philosophy of the
objectives model.
(b) Some topics in the school chemistry
syllabus are spiralled.
(i) Give *two *such topics.
(ii) Suggest
the main purpose of spiralling such topics. (c ) Topics in the
syllabus have to be relevant to society. Explain how the topic “
Nitrogen and its compounds” is relevant to the Kenya society.

Q4.Suppose you have no laboratory technician in your school and
you are required to prepare a reagent of sodium hydroxide
solution.
(a) Indicate the procedure you would use to prepare
the reagent.
(b) As you are making the reagent the alkali drops
on your hand. Outline the First Aid you would give to yourself.
( c) A student asks “ How would you use sodium hydroxide
solution to distinguish between clear solutions of lead and
zinc salt?” Outline the practical procedure you would use to
respond to the student. [15 marks]
