INSTRUCTIONS
Answer question ONE and any other THREE.

1.a) Differentiate between the following terms;
i) Tender and contract. (4marks)
ii) Slump test in concrete and silt test in sand (4 marks)
iii) Farm plan and farmstead ( 4 marks)
iv) Zone planning and factor of safety. (4 marks)

b) A 10m by 15m by 40mm floor slub of a milk parlour unit is to be constructed. The slab is to be made of a concrete with a nominal mix ratio of 1:3:6 by volume. Calculate i) water/cement ratio and ii) Aggregate/cement ratio, assuming the following conditions:
i)Shrikage and wastage allowances of 20% and 10% respectively.
ii)Moisture content of sand 3%.
iii) Moisture content of ballast 2%.
iv) Litres of water added 80
v) Density of water, sand and ballast is 1000kg/m3, 1400kg/m3, 1600kg/m3 respectively.
vi) 50kg of cement is equivalent to 37 lts. (9marks)

2.a) List any 6 method used to ;
i) improve the soil bearing capacity. (6 marks)
ii)preserve and protect the steel from rusting and corrosion. (6 marks)
b) List three methods of wood preservative application. (3 marks)

3. In respect to the following structures list five functional design requirements for each:
i) poultry house
ii) grain store
iii) farm workshop (15 marks)

4. a) EXplain five factors considered in comprehensive economic planning of a new farm. (10 marks)
b) List ten factors considered in selecting building materials. (5 marks)

5. Table below shows figures extracted from survey work where a proposed new school farm of kenya university is to be established. Insert the missing figures labeled A-F and carry out arithmetic check of your results. (15 marks)
